Polymer clay is a versatile synthetic modeling material that is soft and pliable until it is baked (like in a standard oven) and becomes hard. It is available in a variety of colors and brands (Sculpey, Fimo, Premo, etc.) and able to be mixed together for even a wider color palette.
In mid 2005, my husband discovered polymer clay and wanted to attempt to make our daughter's wedding cake topper. We did. Later in that year, I researched online and found Dinko (a great sculptor) and his creations. This inspired me to do more and to create my own version of Dinko's Bird. “The Birdy” started it all. Early in 2006, I began experimenting in jewelry. My daughter was my guinea pig. As they say, the rest is history.
I still constantly use my reference books: Making Polymer Clay Beads, Carol Blackburn; Celebrations with Polymer Clay 25 Seasonal Projects, Sarajane Helm; The Polymer Clay Techniques Book, Sue Heaser; and many more. I also use and like the PolymerCafe Magazine. On my Favorites for internet, I have many sites marked for reference.
I started off slow, allowed myself time and allowed myself to make mistakes. A must is to be patient. I continually learn and read on this topic and on other bead and wire techniques.
Above is only opinion of HAL and personal preference.
